introduction: in cases of poor satisfaction with aphakic glasses and intolerant or reluctant to use contact lenses, secondary intraocular lens (iol) implantation provide an alternative aphakic vision correction. this study aimed to evaluate surgical problems. intraoperative and postoperative complications and visual acuity outcomes of secondary anterior and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation were studied in previously aphakic patients. materials and methods: clinical trial (before & after treatment) study was carried out on secondary lens implantation of 102 patients in yazd hospitals. 42 women (41.18%) and 60 men (58.82%) aged between 48 to 72 years (mean= 62.6 years) were recruited and followed for 10 years, from march 1994 to march 2003.the posterior chamber lens was used in 62 eyes (61%) and the anterior chamber lens used in 40 eyes (39%). demographic data and clinical out-comes were collected from patients medical records. results: final visual acuity (va) of 20/20 was achieved in 48 patients (47%), 51 patients (50%) was achieved va of 20/40 or better and 3 patients (3 %) showed 3 lines decreased of visional chart. there was no observation of major complication or side effects before and after intraocular lens operation. conclusion: the study confirmed that secondary intraocular lens implantation is safe and effective aphakia correction method. it is concluded that intraocular lens implantation may be recommended as an alternative visual rehabilitation with carefully selected candidates.
